Getting the size right

  • Covering an objectTarp length = item length + 2 × height + about 2 ft for tie-down. Same for the width.
  • Covering a roofThe damaged area plus 2 ft on every side, and over the ridge if you can. Most single patches take 10 x 12 to 16 x 20 ft; a whole roof side takes 20 x 30 ft or more.
  • Covering a loadMeasure the load's length, width and height, then add enough to reach the tie-down points.
  • Need 10 x 10 or 12 x 12?Choose 10 x 12 ft. It covers a 10 x 10 area with room to spare. For a 12 x 12 area it's the closest size; if every inch has to be covered, step up to 12 x 16 ft.

Cut size. The finished tarp is about 3 to 5% smaller after hemming. If you need every inch covered, go one size up.

  • Job sitesLumber, materials and anything that can't get rained on.
  • Boats, cars and RVsLong-term outdoor storage that keeps water and sun off.

Know-how from nearly 15 years in tarps

  1. Strap every grommet

A tarp that can move will flap, and flapping is what wears out hems and tears grommets. Rubber tarp straps stretch with the gusts; rope alone doesn't.

  2. Tie down the front edge first

On a moving load, wind gets in at the leading edge. Tuck it under and strap it before anything else.

  3. Go over the ridge on a roof

Water runs under a tarp that stops short of the peak. Run it over the ridge and hold the edges down with boards instead of nailing through the open tarp.

  4. Black or gray

Black is the all-rounder. Gray hides dirt and runs a little cooler underneath in full sun.

  5. Fold it dry

Rinse off dirt with mild soap and water and let it dry before you fold it. Skip harsh solvents, which can damage the coating.

  6. Know when vinyl is the wrong tarp

Vinyl doesn't breathe. For hay that's still curing or equipment that sweats, use canvas or mesh.

Questions we hear most

Vinyl or poly?

Both keep water out. The difference is how long they last outside. Vinyl is made to stay out for months or years; poly is for jobs that last weeks.

Which color should I get?

Same 18 oz vinyl in both. Black is the all-rounder; gray hides dirt and runs a little cooler underneath in full sun.

How should I tie it down?

Use every grommet. Rubber tarp straps or bungees stretch with the gusts, so the tarp stays put without tearing at the grommets. Rope works on a cover that doesn't move, as long as it stays tight. See our tarp straps.

Is the listed size the cut size or the finished size?

Cut size. The finished tarp is about 3 to 5% smaller after hemming. If you need every inch covered, go one size up.
