Getting the size right

  • Lumber tarps18 to 30 ft long, with 5, 6, 8 or 10 ft drops: the taller the load, the longer the drop. Two 24 x 27 ft tarps cover a 48 ft flatbed.
  • Step-deck trailersThe 3-piece set covers each deck level with its own tarp.
  • Steel tarps16 ft wide with 4 ft drops, 20 to 27 ft long, for low loads.
  • Smoke tarps10 x 12, 12 x 16 or 12 x 20 ft over the nose of the load.
  • Coil and machinery tarpsCoil tarps are sized by the coil they cover; machinery tarps by the deck area, with deep drops.

Know-how from nearly 15 years in tarps

  1. Pick the drop for the load height

Lumber tarps have long side drops (5 to 10 ft) for tall loads. Steel tarps have short 4 ft drops for low loads like steel and coils.

  2. Smoke tarp goes on first

Put the smoke tarp over the nose of the load, then the lumber or steel tarp over it.

  3. Lap the front over the back

With two tarps, put the back one on first and lap the front one over it, so the wind slides over the seam instead of into it.

  4. Strap every D-ring, then check

Use rubber tarp straps at every D-ring and check them at your first stop. Loads settle and straps loosen.

Questions we hear most

Which flatbed tarp do I need?

Lumber tarps have long drops for tall loads; the 3-piece set covers step-deck trailers. Steel tarps have short drops for low, heavy loads. Coil tarps cover steel coils, and machinery tarps have deep drops for bulky equipment. A smoke tarp covers the nose of the load under any of them.

How many tarps for a 48 ft flatbed?

Two lumber tarps, lapped front over back.

How should I tie it down?

Use every D-ring. Rubber tarp straps or bungees stretch with the gusts, so the tarp stays put without tearing at the D-rings. Rope works on a cover that doesn't move, as long as it stays tight. See our tarp straps.
