Getting the size right
- Covering an objectTarp length = item length + 2 × height + about 2 ft for tie-down. Same for the width.
- Covering a roofThe damaged area plus 2 ft on every side, and over the ridge if you can. Most single patches take 10 x 12 to 16 x 20 ft; a whole roof side takes 20 x 30 ft or more.
- Covering a loadMeasure the load's length, width and height, then add enough to reach the tie-down points.
Cut size. The finished tarp is about 3 to 5% smaller after hemming. If you need every inch covered, go one size up.

Know-how from nearly 15 years in tarps
-
Pitch it so water runs off
Treated canvas sheds rain, but water that pools on a flat spot can seep through. Give it a slope.
-
Leave a little slack
Cotton canvas tightens up when it gets wet. Tie-downs that are drum-tight when dry can strain the grommets after rain.
-
Dry it before you fold it
Canvas is cotton. Folded and stored wet, it can mildew.
-
Why canvas over vinyl
It breathes, so moisture under it escapes. That matters for hay, machinery and lumber that would sweat under solid vinyl.
Questions we hear most
Is canvas waterproof?
It's water resistant, not waterproof. It sheds rain when it's pitched so water runs off. For a fully waterproof cover, use vinyl.
Why pick canvas over vinyl?
Canvas breathes, so moisture underneath can escape. That's better for hay, machinery and lumber that would sweat under vinyl.
How should I tie it down?
Use every grommet. Rubber tarp straps or bungees stretch with the gusts, so the tarp stays put without tearing at the grommets. Rope works on a cover that doesn't move, as long as it stays tight. See our tarp straps.
Is the listed size the cut size or the finished size?
Cut size. The finished tarp is about 3 to 5% smaller after hemming. If you need every inch covered, go one size up.
