Getting the size right
- Covering an objectTarp length = item length + 2 × height + about 2 ft for tie-down. Same for the width.
- Covering a roofThe damaged area plus 2 ft on every side, and over the ridge if you can. Most single patches take 10 x 12 to 16 x 20 ft; a whole roof side takes 20 x 30 ft or more.
- Covering a loadMeasure the load's length, width and height, then add enough to reach the tie-down points.
Cut size. The finished tarp is about 3 to 5% smaller after hemming. If you need every inch covered, go one size up.

Know-how from nearly 15 years in tarps
-
Short-term by design
Poly is light and quick to throw over a job for days or weeks. If it's going to stay out for months, heavy-duty vinyl lasts years.
-
Check it in the sun
Sunlight breaks poly down faster than vinyl. When it turns chalky or brittle, or a grommet starts pulling, replace it.
-
Don't crank it down
Poly grommets hold less than vinyl. Use stretchy straps or bungees so a gust doesn't rip one out.
-
Right for one-off messes
Painting, moving, clean-up and quick rain cover, where a vinyl tarp would be more than you need.
Questions we hear most
How long will a poly tarp last?
It's made for jobs measured in weeks. Sunlight breaks poly down faster than vinyl, so for months outside, choose heavy-duty vinyl.
Is it waterproof?
Yes, the woven poly is coated and keeps rain out while it's in good shape.
How should I tie it down?
Use every grommet. Rubber tarp straps or bungees stretch with the gusts, so the tarp stays put without tearing at the grommets. Rope works on a cover that doesn't move, as long as it stays tight. See our tarp straps.
Is the listed size the cut size or the finished size?
Cut size. The finished tarp is about 3 to 5% smaller after hemming. If you need every inch covered, go one size up.
